The Science of Habit Formation and How to Use It
Charles Duhigg's research on habit loops reveals a simple but powerful truth: every habit consists of three elements — a cue, a routine, and a reward. When your brain recognises a cue, it automatically runs the associated routine in anticipation of the reward. This is why habits feel effortless once established.
For fitness, the key is to stack new habits onto existing ones. Lay your workout clothes out before bed (cue), train in the morning (routine), and have your favourite post-workout meal ready (reward). Over time, the brain internalises the loop and the behaviour becomes automatic.
