Stress, Cortisol and Your Fitness Progress

Cortisol is your body's primary stress hormone. In short bursts — like during a sprint or a heavy lift — it is useful, mobilising energy and sharpening focus. But when stress becomes chronic, cortisol levels stay elevated, leading to muscle breakdown, fat storage (particularly around the abdomen), poor sleep, and impaired recovery.
Managing your mental load is therefore as important as managing your training load. Simple strategies like box breathing (4 counts in, hold 4, out 4, hold 4), consistent sleep schedules, and regular digital detox periods can significantly reduce baseline cortisol and accelerate the progress you are already working hard for in the gym.
